➤ Who is eligible for Medicare Advantage?
Anyone enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B who lives in a plan’s service area. You must keep paying the Part B premium. People with End-Stage Renal Disease can also join, and under-65 Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities qualify too.
➤ Do I need both Part A and Part B?
Yes. Medicare Advantage requires enrollment in both Part A and Part B. If you have only Part A, for example because you delayed Part B while working, you must enroll in Part B before joining a plan.
➤ Can people under 65 join Medicare Advantage?
Yes. People under 65 who have Medicare because of a disability, ALS or End-Stage Renal Disease can join a Medicare Advantage plan in their service area during an enrollment period, just like people who are 65 or older.
➤ Can I join Medicare Advantage if I have kidney failure?
Yes. People with End-Stage Renal Disease can join Medicare Advantage plans. Some areas may also offer Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans designed for people with kidney disease, so compare networks, nephrologists and dialysis providers carefully before you choose.
➤ What does living in the service area mean?
Each plan covers specific counties or ZIP codes. You must live permanently in that area to join, and a mailing address alone does not count. If you move out of it, you get a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan.
➤ Who qualifies for a Special Needs Plan?
Special Needs Plans add requirements. Dual Special Needs Plans need Medicare and Medicaid, Chronic Condition plans need a qualifying condition, and Institutional plans serve people in nursing homes. Availability varies by county, so check which types are offered where you live.
➤ Can I join Medicare Advantage while still working?
Yes, if you have Parts A and B. Check how your employer coverage works with Medicare first, because joining Medicare Advantage can affect employer or retiree benefits for you and sometimes your spouse, and dropped retiree coverage may not come back.
➤ When can I join a Medicare Advantage plan?
During your Initial Enrollment Period, during Annual Enrollment from October 15 to December 7, 2026, or with a Special Enrollment Period. Current members can also make one change from January 1 to March 31, 2027.
➤ Can I have Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
No. Medigap only works with Original Medicare. Insurers cannot sell you a Medigap policy if they know you are in Medicare Advantage, and a Medigap policy would not pay anything while you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
